Racing in the City

Permalink Posted on Wednesday September 26 2007 at 07:43:08 pm by schuey97 Email

The AustralAsian League reached the half-way mark of its GTR 2007 series, bringing drivers to the concrete canyon of South City. The first two rounds of the series were two hour timed events but round three added a bit of spice to the series with two 30 lap races, the second race being a reverse grid of the entire field from Race 1.

Pre-qualifying was crucial as times were very close to each other, only two seconds covering the entire Division A field resulting in many drivers dropping to Division B with still quick times. Once again ReppohC from Pacifica Racing was the driver to catch as he broke the world record time for the South City Town Reverse layout in the FZ50 GTR. OzSport had a large showing in Div A with five drivers setting good enough times to make the cut with another two OzSporters in Div B.

Race night certainly had a huge buzz with the anticipation of the two sprint races and knowing that the second race could be full of carnage with a reverse grid, thus making the qualifying session important to get out of the mid-pack for race one.

Div A saw Bugle from Southern Cross Racing snare a pole position with M1k from Middle Pack Racing taking pole in Div B.

The drivers of Div A certainly put on a show with many close battles and lots of side-by-side action. There were of course many accidents with some drivers being taken out in the early laps. The end of race one saw ReppohC once again take out another race win with team-mate Ast0 alongside for second. OzSport driver Renesis was able to move his way up the field to finish on the podium in 3rd.

The reverse grid of Race 2 in Div A certainly lived up to expectations as a crash and bash race with most cars ending the event with many damaged panels and suspension. OzSporter Dwayno led the field off from pole after a not so good first race but was not to stay long in front after a coming together with fellow team-mate Neil Pearson who, after the race, apologised for the incident. With the faster cars at the back they soon started to make their way through the pack, resulting in a lot of close incidents and some drivers coming to blow.

As the race wore on some drivers had to start taking care of damaged cars. This resulted in many positions being lost as drivers with less-damaged cars were able to pick up the pieces. OzSport driver Schuey97 was able to make his way up the field, despite a couple of little scares from cars spinning in front of him, to progress from the back of the pack to the front, eventually landing in second position after ReppohC had problems with steering the car around corners. The race was finally won by another Pacifica Racing driver, Charles, with Schuey97 in second and Wabbit from Middle Pack Racing in 3rd.

The end result saw ReppohC take the round win only by just two points from OzSporter Schuey97, who takes the mantle of highest placed OzSporter in a Div A round of the AustralAsian League. 3rd overall was taken out by Astr0 who was a further four points behind Schuey97.

The end of the round saw OzSport drivers finish with Flinty72 in 6th, Dwayno in 8th, Renesis in 10th and Neil Pearson in 14th. In Div B Scuderia_Alan was able to take out 7th with Olddog in 11th.

In the drivers championship, OzSport drivers Flinty72 and Dwayno are 5th and 6th respectively. The teams championship is shaping up to be a cracker, with OzSport currently in 3rd, just one point behind close rivals Middle Pack Racing.

It is on again in the Australasian League - GTR racing with the added element of endurance! And OzSport aren’t holding back as we prepare ourselves to show the rest of the league what we are made of.

When the dust settled on the AAL's TinTop Terror series, we had claimed 3rd in the teams championship and our driver Butters finished 6th in the drivers championship. We are for the most part happy with these results, but naturally we want more, especially to be closer in points to our friendly rivals Middle Pack Racing who took out yet another teams championship. (OzSport championship points for the Tintop Terror series are available on the Events page.)

GTR Endurance racing isn’t for the faint hearted as it requires not only a consistent and quick driving style but also a good knowledge of strategy with fuel and tyres to take out a win. The AAL GTR 2007 series will once again see drivers competing in the top three GTR vehicles; the FXO GTR (FXR), FZ50 GTR (FZR) and XR GTR (XRR). However there will be a difference from previous GTR series as global balancing has come into effect and slowed down the FZR, resulting in the FXR becoming the favorite being now as quick as the FZR but easier to handle. Drivers will be forced to compete in their selected vehicle for the entire series, so vehicle choice will be paramount.

The AAL GTR 2007 series will run four two hour timed events and one sprint round of two 30 lap races. The series first heads to the much loved Blackwood circuit (reversed) on August 22nd. The series will then move to Kyoto GP Long, South City Town reverse (sprint races), Aston GT and will finish on October 17 at Fern Bay (reversed 'Black' configuration).

It is set to be one hell of a championship.
For signups, head to the AustralAsian League site and we shall see you on the track.

In other news OzSport has had a little jumble around of drivers with the team losing Monday Night Racing (MNR) runner Whiplash 13 but gaining another driver Havoc, who was competing with our other team mate OldDog in the MNR series.

Round 2 of the AAL Tintop Terror series was run at Aston using the smaller 3.1 km Club reverse circuit. Drivers were required to run two races of 20 laps with the 2nd race being a reverse grid of race 1's finishing order. The round also required drivers to compete in either the XF GTi or XR GT and resulted in a good mix of both cars being chosen.

OzSport drivers Butters, Dwayno and Flinty72 were able to pre-qualify themselves into Div A, while OzSport drivers OldDog, Schuey97 and Smurf pre-qualified into Div B.

Both qualifying sessions resulted in all drivers being able to achieve times that allowed the entire fields to be covered by a second. Butters qualified with an impressive time of 1:22.91; the only OzSport driver to reach the 22 second mark and under half a second off the pole position time set by Premium Race Team's driver ReppohC who set a 1:22.51

Both races from either division were fast and close with many competitors nose-to-tail for much of the 20 lap races. Up-to-date driver and team standings and race statistics are available on the Events page.

Reverse Grid - Round 2 AAL Tintop Terror

Round 2 did not finish for the Div B drivers after Race 2 as a large argument broke out about a particular driver’s poor sportsmanship towards other drivers. After many protests from drivers, competitor Ingall has been suspended for the rest of the Tintop Terror series, along with a yellow card warning for Ingall's teammate Subuaru. This was not the only penalty given as our own OldDog was disqualified for pre-qualifying in one car and competing in another.

Round 3 of the AAL Tintop Terror series will be at the Kyoto National circuit for a two hour timed event featuring the three turbo powered cars; RB4 GT, FXO Turbo, XR Turbo on 13 June 2007.

After much (well a little) waiting, the AustralAsian League has unleashed their second series for 2007, Tintop Terror. This follows on from the awesome Open Wheel'n series, where OzSport finished its first fully-fledged season in 2nd position, and our very own Davo finished 6th in the driver's championship. (OzSport championship points for the Open Wheel'n' series are available on the events page.)

During the Tintop Terror series, drivers will compete in a range of vehicles, starting with underpowered tintops and finishing with a battle between the three GTRs, the FZR, FXR and XRR. Round 1 will begin on 16 May 2007 at the small Fern Bay Club track in the slow UF1000s, which will certainly result in very close racing. For this round only, drivers must contend with a random grid for race 1 then a reversed grid for race 2.

The AAL news doesn’t finish there though. Before the start of the Tintop Terror series, the AAL has cooked up a one-off race event called the Clubman Classic. This 4 hour endurance event, to be held on May 9 2007, will feature teams of 3 driving both the LX4 and LX6 around the Blackwood Reverse circuit.

F08 Fury Wrap Up

Permalink Posted on Friday April 20 2007 at 02:06:31 pm by Butters Email

The final two rounds of Monday Night Racing's Formula8 Fury series had their highs and lows for OzSport drivers and never lacked drama.

Smurf again proved he is able to compete with the best of them in round nine at Kyoto GP Long by finishing 2nd and then 4th to earn a solid 3rd overall. Surprisingly Neil Pearson finished race one in 11th but made amends by stepping onto the second step of the podium by race two. This was enough for him to claim 5th overall for the round.

Butters and Flinty entered the final round of the series at Westhill International Reverse equal on points thanks to drivers being able to to drop their lowest points scoring round. Butters had a solid start, finishing race one in 7th. Flinty was not so lucky, ending race one in 13th. Race two fared much better for Flinty, crossing the finish line in 8th just behind Butters who equalled his race one performance. Smurf drove well to finish 3rd.

Entering race three, the final race of the series, Butters had a slight points advantage over Flinty and needed a solid result to ensure a top ten points finish. A quick getaway helped Butters into 5th on the 1st lap, with Flinty close behind, however an incident with Big Fish Racing's GasKing meant his race was all but over. Smurf moved up a spot to finish 2nd and Flinty capitalised fully on the situation to take a well-deserved 3rd.

When the dust settled on this 10 round series Smurf emerged the highest placed OzSport driver, finishing 6th overall in the series. Flinty managed to end the series in 9th overall and 2nd highest placed OzSport driver. Despite being in the top 10 for most of the series, Butter's final race clash with GasKing knocked him into 11th. Southern Cross Racing's Bugle was the championship winner.

Overall this was a highly enjoyable series. The OzBee admins put on a great show in a series that had it all .. drama, action and suspense.
